Terms of use
missing.today
Last updated: 2nd November 2026
These terms describe how missing.today may be used.
1. About missing.today
missing.today is an independent site that shows missing-person and unidentified-person case files from named public sources.
The operator is named in the Imprint. The site is not the police, not a government authority, not a private investigator, and not an emergency service. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting for NamUs, any police department, or any other third party unless a page says so.
The site does not run police investigations, decide how a person disappeared, or check every fact on every file against the original source on every visit.
2. Purpose of the information
Files on this site are for general information, education, and public awareness. They do not replace official databases, police notices, or the authority that holds a case.
A file on missing.today does not mean that:
- this site has independently verified the information
- the person is still listed as missing by the authority that holds the case
- the file shows the latest development
- the person is suspected of a crime
- any theory about the disappearance is established fact
Use the source page linked on that case (Sources) when you need the record to rely on.
3. Sources, credit, and accuracy
The source of a file is named on that case. Today that source is NamUs, a U.S. public database. Each case file names its source and links to that source’s page. A link or credit does not mean NamUs or any other source runs this site or has endorsed it.
NamUs’s reuse policy allows certain text and photographs to be used for educational and informational purposes, with credit. Material that carries a copyright notice may need extra permission. That policy is not a blanket licence to take every image or dataset, including by automated means.
Information can be incomplete, out of date, wrong, or later changed. A source may update its own record without this site changing at the same time. Updates here are not necessarily in real time. This site does not guarantee that every file is accurate, complete, current, or always available.
The named source is the primary record.
A case file may also list further-reading links under Community. Those links are not the named source. They are pages this site chose to point to. They may be incomplete, wrong, or later removed. Section 9 still applies.
4. Updates and resolved cases
A case can change. A person may be found, identified, or taken off an official missing-person list.
This site may correct, update, hide, or remove a file when the named source changes, when information is wrong or out of date, when a legal duty or a rights-holder or data-protection request requires it, or when leaving the file on the board would be harmful. The absence of a file here does not prove that the person has been found.
A case is shown as resolved only when the published source supports that. If the record is unclear, the file may stay qualified or be taken off the board until it is clear.
An unchanged page is not confirmation that the person is still officially missing.
5. Copyright
A case file may include text, photographs, and other material that came from a third party. Unless a page says otherwise, those rights stay with the author, photographer, publisher, or other rights holder.
Putting material on this site does not make missing.today the owner, and it does not give visitors permission to copy, share, change, publish, or sell it.
This site aims to publish only material for which there is a sufficient legal basis, including the source’s published reuse rules, a licence, permission, or another basis under applicable law.
Credit on the Sources tab is not a licence to reuse the material. Check the original source and any copyright notice before you copy anything from a case file.
If you believe something on this site infringes your rights, write to the address in section 16.
6. Corrections and removal
Information about missing people can affect the person, their family, and others connected to the case. This section is for people with a connection to a file, for rights holders, and for statutory claims. Anyone else who spots a possible error can use section 7.
The following may write:
- the person on the file
- family members or a legally authorised representative
- a police force or other competent authority
- a copyright holder or photographer
Please include the case page address, what should change, supporting information where you have it, and a way to reply. This site may ask for more detail to check the request.
Requests are looked at promptly. There is no promised response time. The file may be corrected, updated, restricted, or removed. A request is not granted only because someone disagrees with published information.
A request to correct or remove a file is not the same as a statutory claim. A request can still be a data-protection or copyright matter. Those claims are assessed under applicable law, including the rights described in the privacy notice. Statutory rights are not limited by this section.
7. Reporting a problem
If something on a file looks wrong, misleading, out of date, or harmful, and you are not writing under section 6, please say so and, where you can, point to a reliable source.
This site may correct the file, add a note, restrict it, or remove it. A report does not guarantee a change, and it is not a statutory claim.
Do not send unverified accusations, speculation, or information that could put someone at risk.
8. How to use this site
You may use missing.today for lawful personal, informational, educational, and research purposes.
You must not:
- use information here to harass, threaten, or target anyone
- publish private information in order to expose or endanger someone
- spread accusations you know to be false about people connected to a case
- pretend to be the police, a family representative, an investigator, or someone who runs this site
- take information in a way that breaks applicable law or other people’s rights
- use the site for any unlawful purpose
Automated access does not give you extra rights in the material on this site. Applicable law still applies.
9. Other websites
Case files and other pages may link to source sites and other external pages. Those links are for reference. This site does not control them and is not responsible for their content, accuracy, availability, or privacy practices. A link is not an endorsement.
10. Not an emergency service
This site is not an emergency line and does not take emergency calls.
If you have information about a missing person, a possible sighting, or a possible match, contact the police force that holds the case.
If someone may be in immediate danger, call the emergency number in your country without delay.
A tip or message sent here is not a substitute for telling the authorities. Tips are held for operator review and are not published on the board. If you sent a tip while signed in, a reply may appear on your profile. This site does not guarantee that a message will be forwarded to the police or anyone else.
11. Availability
Parts of the site, including individual files, may be changed, restricted, or taken down at any time, including to fix errors, meet a legal duty, or answer a rights-holder request. Uninterrupted access is not guaranteed.
12. Liability
The site and its files are for general information.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability where applicable law does not allow that. These terms do not replace careful publication or a working way to correct or remove a file. Liability for intent, gross negligence, and injury to life, body, or health remains. Other mandatory statutory liability remains.
You remain responsible for checking the named source and, where needed, the authority that holds the case.
13. Privacy
How personal data are processed is described in the privacy notice. These terms should be read with that notice.
Requests about personal data (access, correction, erasure, restriction, or objection) go to the address in the privacy notice.
14. Changes to these terms
These terms may be updated when the site or the law changes. The current text and date are on this page.
15. Applicable law
These terms are governed by the law of the Federal Republic of Germany, subject to mandatory rules that may apply elsewhere. Mandatory consumer rights and other statutory rights that cannot be set aside stay in place.
